Yesterday 6th of February is the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation.⠀

It’s the day that we speak against female genital mutilation through social media, community engagement programs and campaigns.⠀

Female Genital Mutilation involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or another injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.⠀

The practice has no health benefits for girls and women, it can cause severe bleeding and problems urinating, infections as well as complications in childbirth, and increased risk of newborn death.⠀

Sadly, more than 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone FGM in 30 countries in Africa.⠀

Female Genital Mutilation is a violation of the human rights of girls and women which reflects deep-rooted inequality between sexes and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against girls and women.
